The benefits of owning this attractive yacht include having more interior space below decks than most yachts of this size and a truly amazing aft cabin. The finish below decks is excellent.

The cockpit is superbly designed, giving safe seating when sailing and is perfect for after sailing social and dining activities.

Her sailing performance is excellent and others of her class have cruised extensively and even won their class in the ARC Trans Atlantic event. She carries little or no weather helm when heeled and is very responsive. Her sail carrying ability is very good making her a safe yacht that be cruised seriously if required.

The Southerly 38 has a swing keel system and can be lifted at the touch of a button. You will be able to explore rivers and anchorages where a fin keel yacht dare not go. With the keel raised, she only needs 2' 8" of water to float and can dry out upright on her grounding plate. We would definitely recommend you inspect this yacht.

CURRENT OWNERS STATEMENT

We have owned Alfresco from new and initially used her for extended holiday cruising to South West France and Brittany, but for the past three years she has been only lightly used due to ill health. Alfresco is an ideal longer distance cruising boat enabling fast, relaxed passage making with spacious, comfortable accommodation and a massive amount of storage. The lifting keel extends the opportunities for access to tidally restricted marinas and to quieter anchorages. Most of our sailing has been husband and wife only, and we found her easy to sail with two people.

VARIABLE DRAFT KEEL

The fixed ballast is an iron casting which acts as a grounding plate and astransverse stiffening for the keel unit. It is fitted into a moulded recess in thehull in the area of the keel box with stainless steel fastenings. The aerofoil keel blade is cast iron and incorporates a stainless steel pivot at the leading edge.

Variable draft is achieved by raising and lowering the blade with an electrically driven pump, fitted with a manual back-up. All hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance. The keel control is fitted at the helm pedestal with a gauge showing the keel position. A removable stainless steel pin enables the keel to be locked in the “up” position.
