Under sail the Vancouver 34 classic has a light helm and is perfectly balanced in any wind strength, making it easy work for the helmsman or self steering gear. She is surprisingly fast under sail and high average speeds are possible which is ideal for passage making.

MANUFACTURER PROVIDED DESCRIPTION

The Vancouver 34 is every inch an offshore cruiser. The interior accommodation is designed for use at sea, for long periods if required, has good sea berths but still has a comfortably furnished saloon for relaxation when in harbour. The galley is compact and safe to use at sea and there is a large oilskin locker conveniently adjacent to the companionway. The huge chart table has plenty of space for the installation of any amount of instrumentation and there are purpose made stowages for pilot books and charts.

CONSTRUCTION
  • The hull and deck are hand laid up GRP in accordance with Nordseal system and finished in Dark Blue pigmented gel coat

  • The lead ballast keel is 6,000 lbs (2722 kgs) which is encapsulated entirely within the hull moulding

ENGINE

  • The maximum speed under power is in the order of 6 - 7 knots, depending on the conditions. With a cruising speed of 5 -6 Knots at moderate revs.

  • Fuel consumption at cruising speed is in the order of 2.25 - 2.5 litres per hour, which provides for roughly about 100 hours running on a full tank (220 litres), equating to a cruising range of approximately 500 miles.

  • Since installation the engine has been fully serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. The 300 hour service having been carried out in November 2015, when the boat was laid up for the winter.

  • In addition to the fixed diesel fuel tank, 4 x 10 litre plastic diesel fuel cans are carried in the cockpit locker.

 

ELECTRICS & ENGINEERING

  • Battery State Meter

  • Three heavy duty 12v batteries are provided, separately isolated, so that one can be reserved for engine starting

  • 2 x 12v interior socket - one adjacent Chart Table and one at forward end of accommodation

  • VTronix external speaker - VHF

  • Sony stereo system, including a 10 CD changer unit. This provides for the playing of radio, cassette tapes and CD's via six switched speakers, 4 internal and two external.

  • An additional shore power cable, of approximately 10 metres in length, is provided to supplement that originally supplied. A number of adaptors to fit most shore power supply sockets are provided

  • A small inverter is also supplied, sufficient to charge mobile phones or run a laptop computer

  • Ground Plate - At the time of building, in anticipation of the fitting of a SSB radio, a suitable ground plate was fitted to the exterior of the hull. Albeit, such a radio has never been provided

ELECTRONICS & NAVIGATION

  • Large chart table to starboard with stowage for charts under and plenty of space for instruments outboard

  • Bookshelves and stowage for pencils and other equipment

  • In addition to the standard navigational equipment (Autopilot, Log/speed, echo sounder, wind indicator, electronic and binnacle compasses) mentioned elsewhere, there is also provided a trailed log and hand held GPS for emergency use. Further to which a Davis sextant is provided, together with a programmed calculator for sight reductions

  • A clock and barometer are provided adjacent to the navigation station. As are two hand bearing compasses, one electronic the other magnetic, together with a pair of 7x50 binoculars​

  • The cockpit is integral with the deck moulding

  • There are two large cockpit lockers one to port and one aft, each have GRP sealing lids and shockcords to hold them open

  • Two single drained gas bottle lockers are fitted either side of the cockpit

  • There are two cave lockers in the coamings

  • The two large diameter cockpit drains exit through the stern and the floor has a teak duckboard

  • Four harness lifeline attachment points are fitted in the cockpit. Either side just outside the companioway and either side of the wheel

  • The cockpit seats are teak laid

DECK GEAR & LOOSE EQUIPMENT

  • Loffrans Tigress electric anchor windlass was fitted in 2001. This is provided with 10mm (3/8") chain gypsy and is controlled by a pair of foot switches adjacent to the windlass and by a remote switch sited in the cockpit by the helm

  • Horseshore lifebuoy

ACCOMMODATION

The layout is in accordance with the general arrangement drawing. 

GALLEY
  • Twin stainless steel sinks with foot pump and a hot and cold mixer tap, a gimballed gas cooker with two burners, grill and oven with fail-safe on all burners

  • A gas shut off valve is fitted adjacent to the cooker

  • There is ample stowage for crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils and food

  • Eyes are provided for a galley strap and a galley crash bar is fitted

  • A large drained ice box is situated under the forward end of the quarter berth

 

SALOON

  • There is a single settee berth to port, a wardrobe forward with hanging space plus shelves

  • Bookshelf and two lockers outboard

  • Cocktail cabinet with bottle and glasses stowage aft

  • To starboard is a dinette convertible to a double berth with bookshelf and two lockers outboard

  • Twin leafed table on centreline around teak mast support post

  • Teak and holly striped plydeck on cabin sole

 

FORE CABIN

  • V berth arrangement providing two good length single berths with infill to form double

  • The infill stows between the berths to provide a seat when not in use

  • There is a dressing table with mirror in the cabin together with a hanging locker and access forward to the chain locker

  • The floor is teak and holly striped plydeck

  • There is a large opening perspex hatch above

 

HEADS

  • A marine toilet with hinged down lid over is fitted

  • The floor has a teak grating over the shower tray

  • The work surface incorporates a hand basin with hot and cold water with shower mixer tap with stowage under

  • Open lockers are provided outboard

 

COMPANIONWAY

  • The companionway steps are removable to access the engine and incorporate a locker for storage of winch handles etc.

  • To port is a large drained oilskin locker with engine sea water inlet strainer conveniently positioned at the bottom

GENERAL

  • The bilges and lockers are painted throughout

  • A second water tank of 100 litres (22 UK galls) capacity which supplies the manual outlets in the galley and heads.

  • The interior woodwork is finished in satin finish varnish

  • Curtain tracks & curtains

  • 2 x lee cloth

  • 35lbs CQR anchor with 80m of 10mm (3/8") chain stowed in the chain locker. A similar spare anchor is stored on stowage brackets on the pulpit. In addition, a Fortress FX-23 is stowed aft to act as a kedge anchor and has 10 metres of 10mm (3/8") chain attached. A further 15 metres of 8mm (5/16") chain is also provided, in addition to 3 anchor warps of 30, 40 & 50 metres in length

  • 8 Fenders covered in fitted fendasox

  • Warps - in total 8 mooring warps are provided; 2 x 15 metres, 2 x 10 metres and 4 x 6 metres. The latter four are fitted with hard eyes and chain loops

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

  • Plastimo four man life raft stowed on deck in purpose made chocks. Since new (1998)this has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations at 3 yearly intervals.

  • Five Remploy (Commodore II) 150N life-jackets are provided, of the type that also act as a safety harness. These are inflated manually, by means of a pull-down toggle, and also have an oral inflation tube. Each is provided with a crotch strap, a whistle and a light, as well as with a safety line fitted with safety spring hooks at each end. 

  • A full set of in date distress flares in a waterproof container are stowed in the cockpit locker. Consisting of 4 x hand held reds, 4 x parachute rocket reds and 4 x buoyant orange smoke.

  • Horseshoe lifebuoy is supplemented by a floating flashing light, danbuoy and floating heaving line

  • Two good quality waterproof hand torches are provided for use on deck and are supplemented by a couple of smaller torches for use inside

  • A hand operated fog signal, together with spare gas canister is provided

  • A portable manually operated bilge pump is provided to supplement the two fixed pumps that are installed onboard.

  • THE OWNER INTENDS TO REPLACE THE DISTRESS SIGNALS AND HAVE THE LIFERAFT AND FIRE EXTINQUISHERS SERVICED FOR THE 2016 SEASON, WITH LIFEJACKETS AND OTHER SAFTEY EQUIPMENT ALSO BEING CHECKED.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • 3 metre Zodiac inflatable dinghy with fitted rigid floor, stowed in a suitable canvas bag on deck. NB: this item has been extremely well used and has been repaired on several occasions

  • Yamaha 6CMH (6 h.p.) two stroke outboard engine is stowed on the pushpit for use with the above dinghy. This is complete with fuel tank and spare fuel can, together with all necessary fittings. The engine, which has run less than 100 hours in total, has been serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations since new and has recently (2013) been fitted with a new prop

  • Three stow-flat water hoses, of various lengths, on reels are provided

  • A Whitlock folding cockpit table is fitted to the steering binnacle

  • Timber storm boards, together with the necessary fixings, are provided to fit each of the various sizes of hatch and window

  • A remote fuel cut off device has been fitted to isolate the engine fuel supply, together with a port to allow a fire extinguisher to be discharged into the engine space without opening up the engine compartment

 

OWNERS COMMENTS

  • Esante is in reasonably good order given that she has been well used and extensively cruised, during which time I lived onboard for five consecutive seasons.

  • Secondly, as she is not to be replaced and hence no gear is to be transferred to another boat, she comes virtually fully equipped for immediate cruising.

The additional items, not mentioned above include:-

  • A comprehensive library of pilot books and other sailing reference books, together with an extensive folio of admiralty charts
